Christine Elsey (PhD)

Christine Elsey

Christine has been teaching Hatha Yoga for over 20 years. She has developed her own approach to Hatha Yoga using a blend of various alternative therapeutic and educational movement techniques. She has taught all levels including children, adults and seniors at the beginner, advanced and intermediate levels. Christine also specializes in private, one-on-one, sessions that can effectively address individual restrictions and difficulties.

During these sessions, she frequently utilizes a gentle hands-on approach in order to guide learners easily into position if they encounter difficulties, in performing a new posture, with ease. For the past 18 months, Christine has offered a new program in therapeutic yoga, at the “North Shore Orthopedic and Sports Clinic”, where she has the unique opportunity of direct consultation with resident physical therapists (who may already be working on your problem).

Furthermore, Christine has been engaged in an on-going study and certification in a practice called “Bones For Life”, that both counter-acts and addresses the growing issue of bone loss and the continual necessity of bone maintenance among an aging population.

Christine’s interest in movement training originated in early childhood when she fell in love with her studies in classical ballet, which she studied through to adulthood. Her early ballet experience fostered, within her, a love of movement and dance that ultimately led her to a profession as a contemporary dancer, choreographer and teacher. Christine spent many years choreographing and performing with “Metropolis Dance Company” (a Vancouver based contemporary dance co-operative), which she co-founded with well-known Feldenkrais educator Anna Haltrecht (who shared many of her Feldenkrais movement education secrets with Christine over their 20 year partnership in dance).

Throughout her career as a dancer, Christine has performed with many well-known names such as “Evelyn Roth Moving Sculptures”, “Urban Sax”, Jenny LaGon, “Pacific Motion Dance Company”, and “The Body Cartography Project”. Recently, she has performed in works choreographed by Philadelphia’s Leah Stein, and provided choreography, and movement direction, for the Deep Cove Shaw Theatre’s Christmas Panto.
